HAMDEN, Conn. (October 31, 2009) - Junior Kimberly DeLoreto (Hillsdale, NJ) took home the individual title at the 2009 Northeast Conference Championship, turning in the race's lone sub-18 minute time to nab Outstanding Peformer Honors. The Pioneer women finished second with a total of 71 points while the SHU men fourth with 98 total points.
DeLoreto turned in her first-place performance clocking in at 17:58.1, earning NEC Outstanding Performer merit by just over 16 seconds. DeLoreto, who was the 2007 NEC Freshman of the Year, became the second Pioneer to ever win the event and first since SHU's Katie Wrinkle in 2003.
Also claiming All-NEC accolades for the women was freshman Olivia Civardi (Brightwaters, NY) who finished in 14th place in a field of 100 runners. Civardi turned in a time of 19:10.2.
On the men's side, junior Andrew Houghtalen (West Charlton, NY) and sophomore Jeffrey Lusignan (East Montpelier, VT) earned All-NEC honors. Houghtalen finished in 12th place with a time of 26:59.8 while Lusignan was 14th with a time of 27:07.5.
With three runners in the top-10, Central Connecticut State captured its first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) Men's Cross Country Championship title with a team total of 46 points. Individually, Long Island rookie Rogers Kipruto bested the field of 100 competitors to garner both NEC Outstanding Performer and NEC Freshman of the Year honors, marking the second year in a row a freshman took home dual honors. Behind five all-Conference performances, Quinnipiac won the 2009 NEC Women's Cross Country Championship for the unprecendented fifth consecutive year.
Rounding out the SHU women's top-seven finishers was junior Samantha Troy (Lebanon, CT) in 16th (19:15.9), senior Sarah Tencza (Succasunna, NJ) in 17th (19:21.9), freshman Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) in 23rd (19:36.1), sophomore Sarah Pollock (Sandy Hook, CT) in 32nd (20:04.0) and sophomore Mary St. Thomas (Cumberland, RI) in 38th (20:12.0).
For the men, SHU's top-seven was finished out by freshman Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) in 20th (27:25.9), sophomore Richard Marcello (Foster, RI) in 24th (27:32.1), junior Daniel Koehler (Red Hook, NY) in 28th (27:37.8), senior Luis German (Southampton, NY) in 46th (28:02.6) and senior Ryan Murdoch (Salem, CT) in 48th (28:05.1).
The Pioneers will compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship in two weeks in Franklin Park in Boston, MA.
