LORETTO, PA (October 29, 2005) - The Sacred Heart women's cross country team won their first-ever Northeast Conference Championship Saturday afternoon, finishing in a first-place tie with Quinnipiac to claim a share of the title. For the first time in league history, co-champions were declared at the 2005 NEC Women's Championships in a race held at Immergrun Cross Country Course on the campus of St. Francis (PA).
Sacred Heart's Kathleen Henry (Basking Ridge, NJ) won NEC Freshman of the Year honors and Sacred Heart head coach Christian Morrison was voted the conference's Coach of the Year by his peers.
The Pioneers and Bobcats finished with 51 team points apiece to share the team title. St. Francis (PA) finished third with 61 points while Monmouth(126) and Mount St. Mary's (149) took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the team competition.
Sacred Heart's Kathleen Duffy (Monroe, CT) was the Pioneers top runner and had a time of 19:52 to finish fourth. Henry was right behind her in fifth with a time of 20:02 to round out the top five individuals. Sacred Heart also had a ninth-place finish from Erin Kulasewski (West Warwick, RI) in a time of 20:24. The trio was named to the All-NEC team by virtue of their finish in the top-15 runners.
Senior Jenna Pisani (Vernon, NJ) just missed all-conference honors, coming in 16th with a time of 20:50. Junior Anne Duffy (Monroe, CT) was right on her heels in 17th at 20:51. Rounding out the Pioneer's top-seven where senior Kaitlin Clark (Babylon, NY) in 30th (21:52) and senior Ann Regan (Westfield, MA) in 31st (22:00).

Quinnipiac's Katie Gwyther established a new course record in capturing her second straight individual crown. By virtue of her victory, Gwyther earned the NEC's Outstanding Performer award.
For the men, senior Tyler Arnett (Clinton Corners, NY) was SHU's fastest runner finishing in 28:36 in 37th place. Freshman Luis German (Southampton, NY) was 46th in 29:12. The rest of the Pioneer lineup featured sophomore Stephen Zito (Guilford, CT) in 50th (29:33), freshman John Kenworthy (Gloversville, NY) in 52nd (29:57), freshman David Jones (Charlton, NY) in 53rd (29:58), senior Robert Gill (Braintree, MA) in 54th (30:00) and junior Robert McDermott (Lindenhurst, NY) in 64th (30:59).
St. Francis (PA) placed five runners in the top 11 to capture the 2005 Northeast Conference Men's Cross Country Championship. The Red Flash's Ryan Sheehan (Pittsburgh, PA) won the race's individual title for the third time in his career and was named the conference's outstanding performer.
Both Pioneer teams will be in action next on Saturday, November 12th when they take part in the NCAA Regional in the Bronx, NY.
