FAIRFIELD, CT (October 2, 2004) - The Sacred Heart women's cross country team placed three runners in the top-10 including the overall winner to come home winners of the Fairfield University Invitational Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Katie Duffy (Monroe, CT) won the individual title, finishing 24 seconds ahead of the next closest runner. The Pioneer men placed fifth overall with junior Tyler Arnett (Clinton Corners, NY) finishing eighth.

The women tallied 41 points to finish just ahead of Hofstra in second 48 points.

Duffy recorded her first-career collegiate win by finishing in a time of 19:13.8, also a career-best mark. She has back-to-back top-five finishes after coming in fifth at last week's Quinnipiac race. Duffy was a run away winner, with Callie Beeler of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy coming in second in a time of 19:37.1.

SHU's other top-10 finishers were juniors Erin Kulasewski (West Warwick, RI) and Jenna Pisani (Vernon, NJ). Kulasewski finished in sixth with a season-best time of 19:46.7. Pisani was right on her heels in seventh at 19:47, also a season-best time. Finishing just outside the top-10 was junior Kaitlin Clark (Babylon, NY) who notched an 11th-place finish in a time of 20:13.4.

Rounding out the Pioneer top-seven was Margarita Landlius (New Haven, CT) in 16th (20:32.8), Ann Regan (Westfield, MA) in 20th (20:53.x) and Katelyn Botsford (Cresskill, NJ) in 21st (20:55.1).
 

 

On the men side, Arnett recorded a season best time at 27:36.6 to finish eighth. Junior Robert Gill (Braintree, MA) finished up in 12th position with a time of 27:46.1. Not far off that pace was fellow junior Robert Howard (Levittown, NY) in 19th with a time 28:11.1.

The rest of the men's top-seven were senior Michael Hannon (Stony Point, NY) in 38th (29:09.9), freshman Joseph Mordarski (Greenlawn, NY) in 41st (29:15.6), sophomore Robert McDermott (Lindenhurst, NY) in 47th (29:27.3), freshman Stephan Zito (Guilford, CT) in 48th (29:30.1) and sophomore Timothy Larson (Smithfield, RI) in 49th (29:38.3).

Both Pioneer teams are back in action next Saturday, October 9th when the take part in the New England Championships in Boston, MA.
