2007 CCSU Ted Owen Invitational Men's Results
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (September 15, 2007) - The Sacred Heart men's and women's cross country teams ran at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain Saturday afternoon, competiting in the Central Connecticut Ted Owen Invitational. The Pioneer men came home with a second place finish in the event while the SHU women ran fifth.
"This was a great day for the Sacred Heart University cross country program," stated head coach Christian Morrison. "It's early, but both teams performed extremely well today and set a positive tone for a successful season."
On the men's side, Sacred Heart had a pair of runners in the top-10 and four runners in the top-20 as they finished with 71 total points, behind Quinnipiac who won the event with 49 team points. The men picked up wins over Boston University, Mount St. Mary's and Monmouth for the first-time ever and also finished ahead of six Northeast Conference schools. SHU was picked ninth in the preseason coaches poll.
"When our men were picked to finish 9th in the NEC preseason rankings, we all knew we could do better than that. Now some other people know it too."
Leading the way was the tandem of juniors David Jones (Ballston Lake, NY) and John Kenworthy (Gloversville, NY) who finished up sixth and seventh, respectively. Jones ran the 8K course in 26:36 with Kenworthy right on his heels in 26:37. Jones and Kenworthy ran faster than any SHU athlete ever on the Stanley Quarter Park course. The Previous best was Matt Uzenski in 2002 (26:41).
