SHU Wrestlers Compete at Day One of CAA Championship

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Sacred Heart University wrestling team participated in the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Championships at Rider University Friday. Red-shirt juniors Pat Feeley (Johnston, RI) and Ricky Eichenlaub (Woodcliff, NJ), both seeded second in their weight class, recorded wins in the first round.
Feeley defeated Michael Gomez (Drexel), 12-4, in the 125 lb. weight class. In round two, he lost to third seeded Brian Wright (George Mason), 9-5. Feeley wrestles against Jamie Franco (Hofstra) today in the consolation quarterfinals.
In the first round, Eichenlaub won by injury default against Tyler Smith (Rider). He then lost to Brock Mantella (Boston), 4-1. Today Eichenlaub faces Anthony Esposito (Binghamton) in the conti-quarters.
Red-shirt junior Anthony Priore (Garwood, NJ) is seeded fifth in the 157 weight class and earned a 6-4 win over Zac Cibula (Rider) in the first round. In his second match, Priore lost 7-2 to the top seeded Justin Lister (Binghamton). His conti-quarter matchup is against sixth seeded Joey Sheridan (Old Dominion).
Junior heavyweight and sixth seeded Paul Schweighardt (Tinton Falls, NJ) lost to third seeded Corey Waite (Binghamton), 12-3, in round one. Schweighardt rebounded with a 3-2 victory, over Carmen Rondash (Boston), in the first consolation round to move on to face fifth seeded Grant Chapman (Old Dominion) today.
Though he was pinned in his only match yesterday, to third seeded Joe Budi (Old Dominion), sixth seeded Michael Hartman (Cranston, RI) wrestles in today’s conti-quarters against fourth seeded Justin Wieler (Drexel).
After day one the Pioneers sit in eight place out of eight. Binghatom sits in first, with Old Dominion in second.
