Sacred Heart Escapes with 24-19 Victory over Princeton

The Sacred Heart wrestling team posted its second straight with a 24-19 victory over Princeton Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers were led by Ricky Eichenlaub (Woodcliffe Lake, NJ) who earned a pin and William Beiermeister (Boonton, NJ) who won the final and deciding match of the meet.

Princeton (2-18) went up early after Robert Benitez earned a pin for the Tigers at 125 pounds. Sacred Heart (7-9, 0-5 CAA) got 12 quick points after Princeton was forced to forfeit at the next two weight classes. The Tigers would rebound and take a decision and a major decision at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, to regain control of the match with a 13-12 lead.

Michael Hartman (Cranston, RI) turned the match around for Sacred Heart with a close 7-5 decision at 165 pounds to put the Pioneers back on top. Princeton would again leap frog Sacred Heart and regain a one point lead with a decision victory by Travis Erdman. A 4-1 decision at 184 pounds put the Tigers up 4 with just two matches remaining.

However, the Pioneers finished incredibly strong as Eichenlaub earned a pin and a huge six points to put the Pioneers up 21-19 going into the final match. The heavyweights closed things out and Beiermeister, a senior, locked up a Pioneer victory with a decisive 10-3 smashing of Stephen Turner to earn Sacred Heart its seventh victory of the season.

The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow as they take on CAA Rival Rider in Lawrenceville, NJ. The Pioneers will search for their first league win of the season, match time is set for 12:00 pm.
