LYNCHBURG, Va. – In its first year in the East Region, the Sacred Heart University wrestling team finished third at the championship, hosted by Liberty. Seniors Anthony Priore and Paul Schweighardt as well as juniors Justin Belanger and Jonathan Rizzitello each placed second in their respective weight classes.
Priore, a native of Garwood, N.J., defeated Millersville's Dakota Kuhn, 9-2, in the 157 lb. weight class semi-finals to advance to the finals. In the championship match, he lost by decision to Gardner-Webb red-shirt freshman Alex Medved, 6-1.
Scweighardt, SHU's heavyweight from Tinton Falls, N.J., moved on to the finals following a pair of wins by decision. He took down Vincent Sayler (GW), 10-4, in the quarters and Joshua Pelletier (LU), 6-0, in the semis. In the championship bout, Schweighardt fell to Parker Burns (CU) by a score of 7-1.
In the 141 lb. weight class, Belanger, a red-shirt from West Greenwich, R.I., won by major decision in the quarters over Campbell senior Ethan Carmody, 10-0, and went to the finals with a 5-3 win against Richie Spicel (GW). He suffered a narrow 3-1 defeat in the championship to Mike Greck (MU).
After receiving a first round by, Rizzitello, a 165 lb. grappler from Paramus, N.J., defeated Brandon Vernali (MU), 7-3, before falling in the finals to Chad Porter (LU).
At the 133 lb. weight class, junior Anthony Ricco (Stratford, Conn.) won his quarterfinal match by technical fall over Millersville freshman Daniel Calzarette, 16-1, in 6:40. After being knocked into the consolation bracket, following a loss in the quarters, Ricco posted a major decision over Alex Hamm (GW), 8-0, to claim third place.
