FAIRFIELD, CT (April 16, 2005) - The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team closed out the 2005 season Saturday afternoon with a three-game sweep of Southampton College. The Pioneers won by scores of 30-14, 30-17 and 30-21 to finish the year 3-16 overall and 1-10 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
SHU was led by their two departing seniors who where playing in their final contest in a Pioneer uniform. Graduate student Rob Purslow (South Huntington, NY) posted a match-best 13 kills to go with a .455 hitting percentage (13-3-22). He also had three service aces and three solo blocks and three block assists. Senior Michael Gardner (Brookfield, WI) finished with 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage (11-3-22). He also chipped in with three service aces, three digs and four block assists.
The Pioneers hit .333 as a team with 42 kills in 81 attempts with just 15 errors. Graduate student Brent Monden (Kaneohe, HI) had 10 digs to lead the defense.
For Southampton, now 2-13 and 1-11 in the EIVA, Steve Hansen had a team-high seven kills. Matt Bross added nine digs.
Purslow ends his career appearing in 82 games and 31 matches. He has 142 kills, 67 digs and 49 total blocks to his credit in his two years in a Pioneer uniform. Gardner has played in 271ames and 78matches in his four year career. He has recorded 681ills, 176digs, 199total blocks, 67service aces and 18assists in his four years at Sacred Heart. He finishes his career with a .320 hitting percentage.
