Pioneers Close Volleyball Season With Three Game Sweep of Saint Francis (PA)

Fairfield, CT - Senior Mike Ivers (Philadelphia, PA) led all players with 13 kills and eight digs and junior Chris Yantz (Setauket, NY) and senior Brian Rosa (Port Jefferson Station, NY) added 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively, to lead Sacred Heart to a three game sweep of Saint Francis (PA) in men's volleyball action on Senior Night Friday at the Pitt Center. The Pioneers claimed the match by scores of 30-23, 30-27 and 30-27.

In addition to the top three players, Sacred Heart also got a strong performance from senior John Breen (North Andover, MA) who rang up 44 assists and seven kills in his final match as a Pioneer. Sophomore Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) had eight kills. The Pioneers hit an outstanding .406 for the match.

The Red Flash were led by Zach Andrews who had eight winners in the match. Freshmen Pat McManamon and Nick Rivett each had seven kills in the losing effort while senior Brian Higginbotham piled up six winners.

All three games were tight early on before the Pioneers were able to gain an advantage later on. In the first game, the Pioneers held a slim 15-13 edge before running off eight out of ten points to open up a 23-15 lead. The Red Flash cut the deficit to 25-21 before SHU won five of the last seven points for a 30-23 victory and a one game advantage. Ivers led the Pioneers with six kills in the opening game.

The Pioneers opened up a 14-10 lead midway through the second game before the Red Flash came back to make it 17-15. SHU eventually built leads of 21-17 and 25-20 before Saint Francis narrowed the gap to 26-25. However, the Pioneers won four of the last six points of the game to go up by two games. Yantz had a team best five winners for the Pioneers in game two.

Saint Francis took the advantage in the third game, building a 15-12 lead, but the Pioneers won five of the next six points to take a 17-16 advantage. The teams exchanged the next several points, squaring the match at 21. The Red Flash again built a 24-21 advantage but the Pioneers rallied again to take a 27-25 lead. After Saint Francis won the next point, the Pioneers ran off three of the last four points, closing out the match on a service error by the Red Flash. Rosa paced the Pioneer attack with five kills in the final game.

Sacred Heart won four straight matches and five of their final six contests to close out the season. The Pioneers finished the season with 10-11 record, more than tripling their victory total from last season.
