Fairfield, CT - Junior John Breen (North Andover, MA) led all players with 15 kills and libero Brent Monden (Kanehoe, HI) piled up 11 digs on senior night as Sacred Heart swept Vassar, 3-0, in men's volleyball action Tuesday night at the Pitt Center. The win was the first home victory for the Pioneers this year.
The Pioneers got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the opening game. However, the Brewers rallied to tie the game at 11. From there the game went back and forth and was tied at 27 before the Pioneers ran off the final three points for a 30-27 victory.
In the second game, Vassar was the team to start quickly, going up 5-1 and then 12-6. However, the Pioneers called timeout at 12-6 and from that point went on a 13-2 run to open up a 19-14 advantage. Sacred Heart hung on to take the game 30-28. The Pioneers went up 11-2 early in the third game but allowed the Brewers to draw with in two points, at 22-20, before running off eight of the last eleven points to close out the match 30-23.
In addition to Breen and Monden, freshman Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) and senior Mike Ivers (Philadelphia, PA) each had nine kills for the Pioneers. Smith also added 3.5 blocks and had a team best .375 hitting percentage.
The Brewers were led by freshman John Kessenich who had nine kills and a game high .385 hitting percentage. Freshman Brian Biacchi added seven kills for the Brewers (2-16, 0-11 EIVA).
Sacred Heart (2-15, 2-9 EIVA) will finish their season with a road trip to Pennsylvania this weekend. The Pioneers will visit East Stroudsburg on Friday at 8:00 pm and then play at St. Francis (PA) on Saturday at 7:00 pm to close out the year.
