FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 3, 2007) - The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team lost the first game, 30-27, to Vassar College Tuesday night but rebounded and battled their way to three-straight wins to take the match 3-1 over the Brewers in the William H. Pitt Center. The Pioneers posted wins of 34-32, 30-28 and 30-23 to improve their overall record to 8-11. Vassar falls to 8-15 with the loss.
Sacred Heart had four players with double digit kills led by freshman Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) who posted a match-high 20. Efstathiou notched a double double with 14 digs and hit .302 (20-7-43) in the match. Junior Chris Yantz (Setauket, NY) came up with 19 kills with two solo blocks and a block assist. Yantz posted a .412 hitting percentage (19-5-34).
Sophomore Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) hit a team-best .571 (18-2-28) in the match with 18 kills. Junior Brian Rosa (Port Jefferson Station, NY) had 10 kills and eight digs. Senior John Breen (North Andover, MA) passed out 64 assists while leading SHU to a .312 (79-29-160) match hitting-percentage. Sophomore libero Daniel Donohue (Nutley, NJ) had 13 digs in the win.
Vasser was led by Phil Tully who had a team-best 19 kills with five digs, two solo blocks and two service aces. Tom Pawlowski finished with 18 kills and eight digs. Wayne Coito had 11 kills while Kyle Giunta finished with a match-high 15 digs.
SHU will return to the court on Thursday, April 12th when they travel to New Haven for a 7:00 pm match.
