New Haven, CT - Freshman Mike Komlanc (St. Croix, USVI) rang up 10 kills, hitting .350 with five block assists and Junior Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) added a match high 24 kills to lead Sacred Heart to a 3-0 sweep of New Haven in men's volleyball action Wednesday night. The Pioneers won the match by scores of 33-31, 30-27, 30-25 to improve to 9-6 on the season.
The first set was evenly played as the Chargers grabbed an early lead, but Sacred Heart came back and ended up leading by as many as three. In the final points each team had an opportunity to close out the set before the Pioneers scored two points back-to-back for the victory.
A back-and-forth second set saw UNH build a 20-17 lead before the Pioneers evened the scored. New Haven also led by two late in the set at 25-23 before the Pioneers scored seven of the final nine points.
In the final set the teams were tied at 6-6 before Sacred Heart went on a 4-0 run and took control of the set. The Pioneers held the lead from there, despite the Chargers cutting the gap to 24-23 at point.
Sophomore Roger Parent (Burlington, CT) complemented the Pioneer attack, with nine kills and five digs. Junior Scott Grandpre (East Greenwich, RI) put down three winners and registered a team high 11 digs. Senior Dan Donohue (Nutley, NJ) added seven digs.
Gregg Brisbin led the Chargers with 14 kills and three errors on 31 attempts (.355 hitting percentage). He also led the UNH back row with 11 digs. Ryan Earl led the team with 32 assists and added nine digs.
Sacred Heart is back home next Thursday, March 12th when they host Quincy. The match is set to start at 7:00 pm at the Pitt Center.
