Final Stats

Poughkeepsie, NY - Scott Lesserman had 17 kills and 14 digs and Phil Tully threw down 11 winners to lead Vassar to a Senior Day win over visiting Sacred Heart Friday night at Kenyon Hall. Vassar recovered from a big Pioneer comeback in game two to take the match 30-22, 29-31, 38-36, 30-24.

Wayne Coito led the way offensively in game one, recording five kills and no errors in seven attempts. The senior gave the Brewers early momentum with a booming kill followed by a well-placed ace. With the score tied at eight, the Brewers went on a 9-3 run highlighted by three kills from Coito and an ace from Dan Dickson. The Brewers maintained their lead, and Coito closed the game with his fifth kill.

With his team down 16-10 in game two, Sacred Heart's Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) rallied his team to five straight points to pull within one. The Brewers maintained their lead, however, until a Scott Grandpre (East Greenwich, RI) gave the Pioneers a 28-27 lead. Though Vassar soon tied the score, Sacred Heart scored three of the final four points to tie the match.

The Brewers jumped out to an 18-9 lead in game three, with Dickson serving during a Vassar run of seven straight points. The lead soon diminished, with an ace from Sacred Heart's Chris Yantz (Setauket, NY) and five straight Brewer attack erros leading to a 8-0 Pioneer rally to tie the score at 20. The two teams proceeded to trade points past a 30-30 tie. With the score even at 36, Vassar's Scott Leserman had a devastating kill to give the team a 37-36 lead, his ninth total in the game. The Brewers followed with a masterful block from Tom Pawlowski and Steve Micucci to take the hard-fought game.

Vassar took an 8-1 lead to open the third game, and never led by less than five after. The Pioneers could only get as close as 25-20, before kills from Pawlowski and Leserman halted their momentum.

In the finale, the teams played to an 8-8 tie to begin the game. The Brewers proceed to have four runs of at least three straight points to take control of the game, 20-16. Fittingly, Coito closed out the Senior Day win with a kill down the sideline.

Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) led the Pioneers with 15 kills and 15 digs. John Breen (North Andover, MA) recorded 14 digs and 46 assists.

The Pioneers are back in action Sunday March 11th when they host Hunter College. Game time at the Pitt Center is 2:00 pm.
