Ramapo, NJ - Junior Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) had a match high 17 kills and sophomore Roger Parent (Burlington, CT) added seven kills and six digs to help lead Sacred Heart to a 3-0 win over Ramapo in men's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Pitt Center. The Pioneers won by scores of 38-36, 30-21, 31-29.
After a back-and-forth rally for the final ten points of the game, the Pioneers pushed for two to take game one, 38-36. Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) had five kills and Jon Mercado (Corona, NY) chipped in four. Sacred Heart's defense was led by Scott Grandpre (East Greenwich, RI) with five digs while Tim Sadowski (Salem, NH) dished out 18 assists.
Sacred Heart hit .345 with 13 kills on 29 attempts and only three errors in game two. The Roadrunners fell just short, 31-29 in game three to close the match. Efstathiou led the team once again with seven kills and Mike Komlanc added three. The team hit .419. TC Elsasser led the Roadrunners hitting .750 with six kills on eight attempts and no errors.
Shane Donohue collected 17 kills in the match to lead Ramapo while Tom Kohler recorded 13 kills. The team combined for 51 kills on 114 attempts with 25 errors hitting .228 while the Pioneers put away 51 kills on 109 attempts with only 14 errors hitting .339.
The Pioneers host East Stroudsburg in their home opener Sunday. The match is set for a 1:00 pm start at the Pitt Center.
