Pioneer Men's Volleyball Tops Mount Olive and Endicott

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 17, 2007) - The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team swept a pair of matches Saturday afternoon, beating Mount Olive in three-straight and outlasting Endicott College in five games to even their record at 5-5 on the year. SHU posted 30-26, 30-28 and 30-26 wins to beat the Trojans in three and ended the day with a five-game thriller. The Pioneers posted a 30-26 win in game one but dropped the second game 30-28. SHU battled to a 36-34 win in game three with the Gulls responding in the fourth with a 30-24 win. The Pioneers left little to doubt in the fifth and deciding game, sprinting away with a 15-7 win.

Chris Yantz (Setauket, NY) led the Pioneers to the three-game sweep over Mount Olive, posting 11 kills and a .444 hitting percentage (11-3-18). Yantz added three solo blocks to his three-game totals. Senior John Breen (North Andover, MA) finished with five kills in nine attempts with no errors (.556), served up three aces and turned in six solo blocks. Breen passed out 39 assists in guiding the SHU attack to a .330 hitting percentage (47-17-91) over the three games.

The Trojans of Mount Olive College got double digit kills from both Pedro Penate and Cesar Trigo de Serrano. Penate led the team with 16 kills to go with five digs. Trigo de Serrano finished with 12 kills, five digs and a solo block in the loss. Libero Kris Suarez picked up 10 digs in the match.

Sacred Heart freshman Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) led the Pioneers against Endicott, coming away with a match-high 27 kills in the win. Efstathiou finished with a .413 hitting percentage (27-8-46) while posting three solo blocks, a block assist and five digs. Senior Mike Ivers (Philadelphia, PA) posted 10 kills and seven digs while Breen finished with 49 assists, seven kills, 13 digs, five solo blocks and a block assist.

The Pioneers hit .455 (6-1-11) in the deciding game five, led by Efstathiou who had four kills in five attempts.

Endicott had five players in double figure kills led by A.J. Witkofsky who finished with 21 and a .366 (21-6-41) hitting percentage. Matt Keepin and George Chapell each had 15 kills with Chapell earning a double double with 11 digs. Libero Dan Coleman posted a match-best 22 digs.

In the middle match of the day, Mount Olive posted a 3-0 win over Endicott, winning by scores of 30-19, 30-20 and 30-26. Mount Olive's Pedro Penate and Trigo de Serrano had 17 kills each while the Trojans hit .385 (57-15-109) in the win.

SHU will return to the court on Thursday, February 22nd when they open a three-match road trip at New Jersey Tech at 7 pm.
