New York, NY - Devin Zolnowski had a match high 22 kills and Michael Ferragonio added 11 kills and 12 digs to lead NYU to a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart in men's volleyball action Saturday afternoon. The Violets took the match by scores of 27-30, 33-31, 30-23, 30-24.
Junior Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) led the charge for the Pioneers, throwing down 20 kills while junior Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) added 18 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Mike Komlanc added 13 kills while senior Dan Donohue (Nutley, NJ) rang up a match high 12 digs.
The first set was a back and forth affair which eventually wound up tied at 23 before the Pioneers ran off five straight points to take a 28-23 lead. The Violets responded by winning four of the next five points to draw within 29-27 before Smith smashed down a kill to give Sacred Heart the set win. The Pioneers hit .350 in the first set.
SHU opened up a 13-10 lead in the second set before the Violets tied it at 17. Then it was NYU's turn to build a three point lead at 26-23 only to have the Pioneers even the set at 29. The teams exchanged points until a Ferragonio kill and a SHU attack error allowed the Violets to even the match at one set apiece.
NYU controlled the final two sets nearly wire-to-wire. In set three the Violets got out to a 9-5 advantage and the Pioneers never got closer than three points after that. NYU built a 10-6 lead in the fourth set and never looked back.
The Pioneers are back in action next Saturday, February 21 when they visit Ramapo for a 1:00 pm match.
