Fairfield, CT - Freshman AJ Nally had 12 kills and 13 digs and sophomore Ryan Fredrickson led all players with 15 kills as Springfield College posted an impressive 3-0 win over Sacred Heart in men's volleyball action Tuesday night at the Pitt Center. The Pride won the match by scores of 30-20, 30-17 and 30-24.
Springfield came out hot in the first game, posting a .429 hitting percentage. The Pride jumped out to an 8-4 lead and opened up as much as a 10 point bulge, 23-13, before closing out the victory by the same margin. The Pride had three players with six kills in the opening game.
The Pride continued to control the play in the second game, jumping out to an 11-5 lead. The Pioneers narrowed the deficit to 11-7, but the Pride attack became too much. The Pioneers trailed 18-12 before Springfield ran off nine of the next 11 points to open up a 27-13 lead en route to going up by two games.
The Pioneers started quickly in the third game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. However, the Pride came back to tie it at 7-7. The teams exchanged the next series of points before Springfield ran off four straight to open up an 18-14 lead. Sacred Heart hung tough to draw within 20-17, but Springfield won 10 of the final 13 points to close out the match in three straight games.
Senior Chris Yantz (Setauket, NY) led the Pioneers with 12 kills while senior Mike Ivers (Philadelphia, PA) added seven winners. For the Pride, Javier Rosario had 10 kills and 13 digs to complement his other two teammates. Springfield hit .337 for the match.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday night when they host Harvard in an EIVA match. Game time at the Pitt Center is set for 8:00 pm.
