New York, NY - Senior Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) had a match high 20 kills as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball stormed back from an 0-2 deficit to claim a five set victory over Hunter in men's volleyball action Thursday night. The Pioneers improve to 6-3 on the year with the victory.
The Hawks looked dominant in the first two sets taking 30-21 and 30-22 victories. Then in the third set, Sacred Heart came out on fire, running up a quick 9-1 lead with Hunter's only point coming off a Pioneer service error. However, the Hawks showed some resilience, fighting their way back and eventually cutting the lead to just three points on two occasions, 25-22 and 28-25. However a Hunter service error followed by a Pioneer kill would force a fourth set.
In the fourth, both teams battled early on, much like the first set, trading one point leads. The Hawks seemed to have gain control with a 19-15 lead, but the Pioneers continued to show heart and were able to tie things up at 20 before taking a 30-27 win and move onto the final set. Sacred Heart led most of the way in the fifth set and eventually picked up the 15-11 comeback victory.
In addition to Smith, sophomore outside hitter Jon Mercado (Corona, NY) was next in line with 14 kills and four total blocks. Sophomore setter Tim Sadowski (Salem, NJ) tallied 61 assists and four total blocks in the victory. Junior Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) rang up 13 kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Wojciech Jakubiak led the Hawks with 19 kills and 11 digs, while senior middle blocker Shandu Foster registered 12 kills and junior setter Zacarias Ripoll put up 50 assists, ten digs, seven kills and three total blocks.
Sacred Heart is back in action Saturday February 14th when the Pioneers visit NYU in their first EIVA match of the season. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
