Fairfield, CT - Sophomore Tomas Bochicchio had a game high 20 kills and senior Scott Stoner added nine kills and a game high 12 digs to lead Stevens Institute of Technology over Sacred Heart, 3 games to 1 in men's volleyball action Sunday afternoon at the Pitt Center. The Ducks took the match by scores of 28-30, 30-27, 30-20 and 30-20.
Sacred Heart got off to fast start in the first game, hitting .394 to take the win. The Ducks jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but the Pioneers were able to hang around long enough and eventually took the lead at 26-25. The Ducks grabbed a 26-25 advantage, but the Pioneers would win five of the last seven points to close out the game.
The second game was another closely contested one. Sacred Heart jumped out to a 3-1 lead but the Ducks came back and opened up a 14-9 edge of their own. After the Pioneers rallied again to tie the game at 21, the Ducks opened up a 25-22 lead. SHU came back again to cut it to 27-26, but Stevens won three of the last four points clinch the win.
Stevens took the match over in the third game, hitting .364. The Ducks jumped out to leads of 12-6 and 16-8. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 21-17, but the Ducks won nine of the last twelve points to take the edge, two games to one. Stevens continued to roll in the fourth game, in which they hit .407 and never trailed en route to closing out the match.
The Pioneers were led by junior Chris Yantz (Setuaket, NY), who had 13 kills. Senior Mike Ivers (Philadelphia, PA) registered 11 kills while sophomore Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) threw down 10 winners and had five blocks.
The Ducks hit a fantastic .339 for the match, sparked by 57 assists from Michael Schulte. Senior Will Foley had 13 kills while sophomore Joe Trinsey registered 10 winners. Sophomore Andrew Cranford, who had eight kills in the last two games, finished the match with 11.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday night when they host Springfield at the Pitt Center. Game time is 7:00 pm.
