Fairfield, CT - Senior Mike Ivers (Philadelphia, PA) racked up 14 kills and senior John Breen (North Andover, MA) added eight kills and 32 assists as Sacred Heart posted a 3-0 win over Lasell in season opening men's volleyball action Monday night at the Pitt Center.
The Pioneers took the match by scores of 30-18, 30-26 and 30-28. SHU jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the first game and never looked back, paced by five kills from Breen. In the second game junior Christ Yantz (Setauket, NY) led the way with four kills while Ivers and Breen each tallied three. Yantz finished the match with eight kills.
The final game was a tight affair throughout. The Pioneers were able to get some cushion, taking a 26-24 lead, but Lasell came back to take a 27-26. However, the Pioneers ran off four of the final five points to seal the victory. Ivers took the Pioneers on his back in the final game, recording seven winners lead the team to the win.
For Lasell, Andy Cass had six kills to lead the way, while Tyler Hammond and Dwyane Cartenga each had five winners in the losing effort.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday when they participate in a tri-match at Newbury College. SHU will face Elms College and the host Newbury beginning at 11:00 a.m.
