New Paltz, NY - The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team began its 2009 season with two victories at the New Paltz Tournament Friday night. The Pioneers beat the host Hawks in the first match, 3-1 (30-22, 35-33, 18-30, 30-24) and got past MIT in five games (25-30, 22-30, 30-24, 30-27, 15-11) in the night cap.
Senior Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) and junior Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) led the Pioneers in both matches. Against New Paltz Efstathiou led the way with 20 kills while Smith put down 12 winners. Freshman Mike Komlan (St. Croix, USVI) had 9 kills and hit .571. SHU hit .254 for the match to post their first victory of the year.
Efstathiou led the Pioneers against MIT as well, throwing down 21 kills. Smith had 17 kills and 11 digs and sophomore Roger Parent (Burlington, CT) posted 12 kills and seven digs.
Sacred Heart takes on Eastern Mennonite in the championship match this afternoon at 1:00 pm at SUNY-New Paltz.
