Chatterton Records 23 Kills In Season Finale

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team ended the 2018 season with a 3-2 loss at EIVA foe University of Charleston (WV) Saturday afternoon.

Rob Chatterton was the bright spot for the Pioneers, finishing the day with 23 kills and only two errors on 30 swings, for a .700 hitting percentage. Taylor Bloomquist added nine kills for the Pioneers. Joshua Ayzenberg recorded 14 digs in the loss for the Pioneers.

Records

SHU           7-15; 2-12 EIVA

Charleston 16-10; 5-9 EIVA

First Set: UC 25-21

  • After dropping the first point, Taylor Bloomquist and a pair of Robert Costigan kills jumpstarted a 4-0 Pioneer run to put a SHU in front 4-1
  • UC scored four of the next five points knotting the score 5-5, the first of three ties through 7-7
  • Anthony Rivera put the host in front with a kill, that was followed by consecutive Eugene Stuart built a 10-7 advantage
  • A SHU hitting error gave UC its largest lead of the set, 12-8
  • A service error started the Pioneers on an 8-4 run that brought SHU even at 16-16 on a Rob Chatterton kill
  • Anthony Rivera put UC back in front with a kill on the next service and the host finished with an 9-5 run

Second Set: UC 25-21

  • The Pioneers scored the first two points of the set, with a Jakob Karlsson kill and a service ace from Noah Ricchetti
  • That would be the largest lead of the set, through the first 40 points, as the two teams tied 18 times
  • A Bloomquist kill knotted the score, 20-20
  • A Ryan Santos kill put the Golden Eagles in front with a kill on the next point
  • Three consecutive aces from Stuart put UC in front 24-20
  • After a service error by Stuart fended off the first set point, Max Senica put the ball on the floor for the win

Third Set: SHU 25-23

  • Bloomquist and Emerson Waumans blocked a Stuart attack for the opening point of the third set as the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-1 lead
  • The Pioneers were able to maintain that lead until a hitting error that tied the score 11-11
  • That was the first of seven straight ties, through 17-17
  • Stuart gave the host a 19-17 edge with back-to-back kills and maintained the lead until a Stuart service error tied the score once again, 20-20
  • The teams were tied at 21, 22 and 23, before SHU scored the final two points to earnt he set victory

Fourth Set: SHU 25-19

  • The Pioneers never trailed in the fourth set, after three ties in the first six points
  • Three Rob Chatterton kills comprised half of a 6-0 Pioneer run that built a 9-3 advantage
  • UC was never able to move closer than three points the remainder of the set, 18-15
  • SHU pulled away with seven of the last 11 points of the set

Fifth Set: UC 15-5

  • Errors by both teams started the fifth-set, with a 1-1 tie
  • Three hitting errors by the Pioneers helped UC to a 5-0 run, that opened a 6-1 advantage
  • The two squad traded service errors, before a 6-2 run by the host opened a 13-4 advantage
  • A UC service error provided the Pioneers their fifth point but two SHU errors gave the Golden Eagles the win

  • The Pioneers had a 47-40 advantage in digs in the match
  • Bloomquist posted a match-best five blocks Saturday afternoon
  • SHU had 13 kills and three blocks in winning the fourth set
