Pioneers Open EIVA Play With A 3-0 Sweep Over Charleston (W.V)

Fairfield, CT-  The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team kicked off EIVA play as they swept the Charleston (W.V) Golden Eagles 3-0. The Pioneers were lead by  Christopher Delucie who tallied 15 kills. The Pioneers now move to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the EIVA. Sacred Heart is back at home tomorrow as they take on the Golden Eagles again, at 7:30pm.

 

Noteworthy-

  • Christopher Delcuie hit 83.3% in the opening set, registering 5 kills. Delucie went on the finish the night with a kill percentage of 41.4% and registered 15 kills
  • Taylor Bloomquist had an impressive 4 total blocks in the second set alone. He went on to finish the day with 7 total blocks
 
 

SET 1-  (SHU 25, UC 17)

  • The Golden Eagles got on the board first after an attack error from the Pioneers, but Doug Dzema answered quickly with a kill of his own
  • Noah Ricchetti came to the service line, and picked up back-to-back aces to move Sacred Heart up 5-2
  • A big solo block from Ricchetti forced the Golden Eagles to take their first timeout, as the score stood 14-10
  • Delucie maintained the lead for the Pioneers as he picked up a kill, followed by a block from Bloomquist to keep the Pioneers lead 18-12. Charleston would attempt to take a timeout to stop the momentum but it wouldn't work, as SHU finished the set 25-17
 

SET 2- (SHU 25, UC 13)

  • Fireworks flew in the first point, as Delucie saved a ball, that would follow with a Bloomquist solo block
  • Bloomquist was feeling it early, as hit added three solo blocks, in the first five points
  • The Pioneers started the second set on a 7-0 run. The Golden Eagles would get their first point of the second set off an attack error from Ricchetti
  • The Pioneers wouldn't stop pouring it on as they held a 17-6 advantage coming off two Delucie kills
  • Blake Cox came off the bench for SHU and picked up a quick ace, moving the score to 21-9
  • The Pioneers would dominate the second set, ending with a score of 25-13
 

SET 3- (SHU 25, UC

  • The Golden Eagles had some early success in the final set, as they jumped to a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers responded quickly, after a couple Charleston errors, and a kill from Michael Comens to tie the score up 5-5
  • SHU picked up their first lead of the set after back-to-back block assists from Emerson Waumans, and Zema, to move the score to 8-6
  • Zema would pick up a Sacred Heart ace for himself to move the score 12-10, but the Golden Eagles weren't going down without a fight as they tied it back up at 12-12
  • As the final set came to a close the Pioneers held on, winning 26-24
