FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 5, 2014)—For the second night in a row, Will LeClerc (Fairfield, Conn.) led the Pioneers with 11 kills as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 12 Penn State on "Senior Night" Saturday in the William H. Pitt Center. SHU is 9-18 heading into Wednesday's season finale against Rutgers-Newark.
The Nittany Lions jumped out to a four-point lead to open the match. The Pioneers remained close, but trailed for the opening half of the set until a sneak-attack from setter Benjamin Thomas (Swansea, Ill.) tied the score at 13. A Penn State attack error gave Sacred Heart its first and only lead of the set before a three-point run put the Nittany Lions back on top for good. With a kill from Aaron Russell PSU took the set 25-20.
Penn State dominated the second set taking a quick 5-1 lead and never looking back. The Nittany Lions capitalized on 15 SHU errors to claim the set 25-17. Senior Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) posted an errorless set hitting .500 with three kills on six attempts.
After trading points to open the third set, the Pioneers made a statement with a four-point run to take a 6-2 lead. Penn State came back to tie the score at 10, 13 and 20, but it always broke in Sacred Heart's favor. But with the score knotted at 22, Peter Russell sent down a kill to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the set and force Sacred Heart to call a timeout. PSU came out of the break with another kill putting them at match-point, but the Pioneers weren't going away that easy quickly tying the score at 24. But two errors cost them the set, 26-24.
