HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 1, 2014)—The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team picked up a pair of road wins Saturday in the Canavan Arena at Stevens Tech in Hoboken, N.J. The Pioneers started off their day with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 15-25, 25-18) win over Eastern Mennonite. Then, followed that with another win with the sweep of host-school Stevens Tech (25-13, 25-21, 25-18).
Sacred Heart 3, Eastern Mennonite 1
The Pioneers and Royals exchanged points early in the opening set, but a 10-3 run, featuring five kills from Sophomore Austin Arcala (Long Beach, Calif.), sealed the 25-16 win for SHU.
Sacred Heart claimed the second set 25-17 before dropping the third 25-15. But they came out strong in the fourth set, outhitting EMU 11 kills to six on the way to the 25-18 win.
Arcala led the match with 12 kills, while sophomore R.J. Uhlir (Norfolk, Neb.) recorded 26 assists.
Sacred Heart 3, Stevens Tech 0
Sacred Heart had its best set of the match in the first game hitting a combined .368. Despite trailing early, the Pioneers rallied stringing together a six-point run behind the serve of Uhlir, and a nine-point run on the string serving of Arcala, who recorded three aces in the match. A service ace from Uhlir sealed the 25-15 set win.
The Ducks held the lead through the first half of the second set, but the Pioneers came back behind Raymond Satagaj's (Rocky Hill, Conn.) three-point service run to take a 12-10 lead. Sacred Heart held a small lead throughout the remainder of the set for the 25-21 win.
Much like the set before, SHU made a comeback on Satagaj's five-point service run early in the set, but Stevens Tech held tight fighting on each point. With the Pioneers up by two, Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) went to the service line. The redshirt junior went on the attack for a four-point run giving SHU enough of a cushion to cruise to the 25-18 win.
The Pioneers combined for 21 blocks throughout the set and capitalized on 46 Duck errors.
