FAIRFIELD, CONN. (January 25, 2014)—The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team dropped a three-set non-conference match to Lewis Saturday night in the William H. Pitt Center. Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) led the team with 10 kills as the Pioneers drop to 1-4 this season.
Sacred Heart took the first point of the match on a kill from sophomore Austin Arcala (Long Beach, Calif.), but the Flyers took the next three for an early lead they maintained throughout the opening set. The Pioneers kept the score close, but a six-point Lewis run increased the Flyers to a comfortable lead as they headed for the 25-14 win.
The teams traded points early in the second set, but Lewis strung together several three-point runs slowly improving their lead. Arcala made an attempt to hault the Flyers at set-point with a kill, but Greg Petty answered with one of his own to give Lewis the 25-18 win.
Errors hurt the Pioneers in the final set. The Flyers capitalized on 17 SHU errors, winning the match with the 25-16 win.
Sacred Heart heads to Stevens Tech February 1 to face Eastern Mennonite at 1:00 p.m. and Stevens Tech at 3:00 p.m.
