Sacred Heart Mourns the Loss of Former Pioneer Patrick Sibley

FAIRFIELD, CT (August 19, 2013) - The Sacred Heart University community is mourning the loss of Patrick Sibley, a former member of the men's volleyball team, after he died tragically on Sunday morning in a Metro train-related accident.

Sibley was a member of the Pioneers in 2011 before transferring to George Mason University where he was entering his senior season.  The Sacred Heart and George Mason Athletics families extend their deepest condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Patrick.

"I am so deeply saddened by Pat's passing and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this very difficult time," stated head women's volleyball coach Rob Machan, who coach Pat and the men's team in 2011.  "We are all going to miss his love and respect for the game and how he touched all of us that knew him with his love of life."

Sibley played for the Pioneers for one season and helped lead SHU to a 13-9 mark and a 5-3 record in the EIVA.  He was fourth on the team with a 124 kills and posted a .339 hitting percentage.  He was second on the team with 41 blocks.  Sibley joined George Mason in 2012 and after sitting out his first season, he earned All-Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) first team honors in 2013. Sibley led the team with 77 total blocks and was second in service aces (21). He played in 21 matches, all but two in a starting role. This past season saw Sibley and his older brother, Shaun, play as teammates. He was an integrative studies major with a concentration in advertising.

"Our hearts are heavy with this tragic loss and our prayers are with the Sibley family," commented SHU men's volleyball coach Kalani Efstathiou.  "Pat had a profound and lasting impact on his community both at Sacred Heart and George Mason. I knew Pat as a fierce and gifted competitor on the court. His friends here at Sacred Heart will continue to cherish the love he shared generously with the lives he touched."

On Tuesday, August 20th, Sacred Heart will hold a Memorial Mass at 8 pm in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit for Patrick.
