The Sacred Heart men's and women's track & field teams opened up the 2010 outdoor season over the weekend at the SUNY Farmingdale State Invitational. The Pioneers won a combined 17 events on the day, 10 on the women's side and seven on the men's.

Grad Student Sarana Hyatt (St. Albans, NY) won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.93 seconds, qualifying her for the New England Championships in the event. Sophomore Justine Ameye (Randolph, NJ) was third in 16.93 seconds. Sophomore Karlie Dean (Stormville, NY) won the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.22 seconds and posted a New England qualifying time in the 200 meter dash. Dean finished second in the event clocking in at 25.76 seconds. Hyatt followed her in fourth place with a time of 27.45 seconds.

In the field, sophomore Athalia Smith (New Britain, CT) won both the hammer throw and shot put events. Smith took the hammer with a New England qualifying throw of 165'01" (50.32m) and won the shot with a toss of 39'7.75" (12.08m). Her sister Chantaul Smith (New Britain, CT) finished second in the shot put (11.92m) and fourth in the hammer throw (44.90m). Sophomore Christine Middleton (Colchester, CT) won the discus and finished third in the hammer throw. Middleton bested the field by 13 feet with a throw of 120'05" (36.71m) in the discus. She threw 149'05" (45.55m) in the weight throw.

In the javelin, senior Bonnie Kilis (Marlborough, CT) took home the title with a throw of 130'03" (39.70m), surpassing the New England Championship standard. Hyatt finished fourth in the event with a throw of 76'11" (23.44m). Senior Kerry Ojeda (Coram, NY) and freshman Lauren Sudbey (Sandy Hook, CT) finished first and second in the pole vaults, clearing the bar at 10'6.00" (3.20m) and 10'00.00" (3.05m) respectively.

The Pioneers finished seven runners in the top-10 of the 1,500 meter event. Senior Sarah Tencza (Succasunna, NJ) won the event with a time of 4:57.55. Sophomore Bridgid Paddock (Stony Brook, NY was second (5:01.17), junior Dana Troy (Lebanon, CT) was third (5:05.00), freshman Erin O'Shea (Port Jefferson Station, NY) was fourth (5:07.77), senior Cristina Soares (Naugatuck, CT was sixth (5:08.17) , sophomore Johanna Acosta (Hartford, CT) was seventh (5:09.17) and freshman Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) was 10th (5:28.65) in the event.

In the 800 meters, SHU placed six runners among the top-11 finishers led by freshman Olivia Civardi (Brightwaters, NY) who finished third with a time of 2:25.84. Soares ran in seventh (2:33.25), Acosta finished eighth (2:34.55), freshman Lauren Gruchala (Colden, NY) was ninth (2:39.72), Troy was 10th (2:41.79) and sophomore Caitlin Clark (Dumont, NJ) was 11th (2:44.82).

Sacred Heart also dominated the 5,000 meter race with five of the top-six finishers. Junior Samantha Troy (Lebanon, CT) won the event with a time of 18:37.75. Sophomore Brittany Llobell (West Sayville, NY) was second (18:41.42), freshman Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) was third (18:50.02), senior Theresa Campbell (Colonia, NJ) was fourth (19:26.14) and sophomore Sara Pollock (Sandy Hook, CT) was sixth (20:19.55).

In the 400 meter hurdles, junior Stephanie Kanner (Coram, NY) finished second with freshman Jennifer Sant Anna (Montvale, NJ) in third. Kanner clocked in at 1:11.16 with Sant Anna in at 1:11.92. Kanner picked up a win in the long jump with a leap of 16'6.00" (5.03m). Freshman Ashley Beck (Nesconset, NY) finished fifth with a jump of 15'5.50" (4.71m). The Pioneer 4x400 meter relay team of Kanner, Paddock, Tencza and O'Shea finished second in the event with a time of 4:30.01.

In the men's 10,000 meters, senior Ryan Murdoch (Niantic, CT) won the event with a New England qualifying time of 32:27.92.

In the 400 meter hurdles, junior Daniel Galanto (East Hampton, CT) and junior Scott Kasper (East Longmeadow, MA) was fourth. Galanto clocked in at 57.61 seconds with Kasper crossing in 59.33 seconds. Kasper earned a second place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.93 seconds followed by junior Sean Barrett (Islip Terrace, NY) in fourth with a time of 23.20 seconds.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, freshman Colin Seidl (Cochecton, NY) won the event with a time of 9:45.96. Senior Matthew Miller (Blauvelt, NY) finished fifth in 10:54.63.

The Pioneers dominated the 1,500 meter run with seven of the top-10 finishers led by sophomore Jeffrey Lusignan (East Montpelier, VT) in the top spot with a time of 4:08.77. Freshman Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) was second (4:10.03), sophomore John Ahern (Islip Terrace, NY) was fourth (4:14.49), freshman Kent Harlow (Burnt Hills, NY) was fifth (4:16.34), junior Daniel Koehler (Red Hook, NY) was sixth (4:17.32), freshman James Gladysz (Wading River, NY) was eighth (4:18.44) and senior Brendan Rickert (Danbury, CT) was 10th (4:18.86).

Senior Keith Rowe (Taunton, MA) won the 110 meter hurdles clocking in at 15.28 seconds, a New England qualifying time. SHU also won the 800 meters with Lusignan winning the event in 2:02:59. Senior Matthew Chorney (Bristol, NH) finished fourth in 2:04.02 followed closely by sophomore Michael Amato (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) in fifth at 2:04.37. Connelly was seventh in 2:06.27.

In the 5,000 meters sophomore Richard Marcello (Foster, RI) finished first with a time of 15:38.85 followed by junior Stephen Benoit (Wethersfield, CT) in third at 16:12.60. the 4x400 meter relay team of Ahern, Lusignan, sophomore Taylor Dressman (Brookly, NY) and Kasper finished fourth with a time of 3:38.93.

In the field events, junior Sean Rothenburger (Elmwood Park, NJ) won the javelin event with a throw of 187'07" (57.18m) meeting the New England standard. Sophomore Zachary Martin (Hebron, CT) was third at 160'02" (51.57m) and senior Brett Luongo (North Attleboro, MA) was fifth in 162'06" (49.54m).

Sophomore Chase Petrucci (Harvey Cedars, NJ) was fourth in the shot put (13.42m) and fifth in the hammer throw (37.68m). Sophomore Christopher Mahl (South Burlington, VT) was second in the hammer throw with a toss of 142'02" (43.33m) and 10th in the discus with a throw of 113'03" (34.51m). Freshman Matthew Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) was fourth in the discus with a throw of 128'00" (39.02m).

Junior Nicholas Phillips (Portland, ME) was third in the long jump with a leap of 6'00.00" (1.83m). Galanto, Rowe and freshman Scott Polis (East Patchogue, NY) finished second through fourth in the pole vault. Galanto cleared a height of 13'6.25" (4.12m); Rowe came in at 13'00.25" (3.97m) and Polis at 12'00.00" (3.66m).
