Sacred Heart Track Teams Open Indoor Season At Yale Season Opener
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2013-14 indoor season on Saturday at the Yale Season Opener at Coxe Cage.
The men's team got a pair of top-five finishes from redshirt-senior Marc Troiani (Valhalla, N.Y.) in the field. Troiani won the shot put with a throw of 52'7.5" (16.04m). He also finished fourth in the weight throw with a throw of 52'3.75" (15.94m). Troiani qualified for the IC4A's in the shot put and the New England meet in the weight throw. He currently ranks second in the NEC in both events. Daniel Pepitone (Oakhurst, N.J.) placed eighth in the weight throw with a throw of 44'2" (13.46m). Drayke Jackson (East Northport, N.Y.) had a fifth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 13'3.5". Brandon Hutchinson finished sixth in the long jump at 21'9.5", as Joshua Beloff (Marblehead, Mass.) came in eighth with a leap of 20'11.75".
The Pioneers' top finish on the track came from Sean Ferguson, who won the 3,000m race by over 25 seconds in a personal-best time of 8:32.01. He currently leads the NEC rankings by more than 27 seconds. Gregory Hazell (Airmont, N.Y.) finished fifth in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.77 seconds. Freshman Cameron Swift (Oxford, Conn.) placed eighth in the mile with a time of 4:37.22 as Colby Jennings (North Haven, Conn.) finished 10th, clocking in at 4:40.58.
Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, N.Y.) won the women's 5,000m race in a time of 17:04.72. Elizabeth Hutchins (Pawcatuck, Conn.) was second with a time of 17:28.89, as Emma Bolduc (Peterborough, N.H.) came in third in 17:48.08. Both Castrogivanni and Hutchins surpassed the ECAC qualifying standard of 17:33.64. Hutchins broke the 18 minute barrier for the first time in her career, setting a new personal best by 36 seconds. Bolduc also recorded a personal best and topped the New England qualifying standard of 18:20.64. Castrogivanni, Hutchins, and Bolduc currently rank first, second, and fourth respectively in the NEC.
Sacred Heart had a pair of top-four finishes in the 800m race. Katelyn Racanelli (Riverside, Conn.) finished second in a time of 2:21.49 as Bridget Carey placed fourth in 2:23.92. Their times are the top-two in the NEC. Freshman Nicole Bartosch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) came in third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.36 seconds. She was also sixth in the 200m dash in 25.87 seconds. Bartosch automatically qualified for the New England's in both events.
Ashia Wright (Cheshire, Conn.) had a fourth-place finish in the 60m dash, recording a time of 7.76 seconds. Wright easily beat the qualifying standard for the New England's, and has the second-fastest time in the NEC. Mia Imbesi (Syosset, N.Y.) finished fifth in the 3,000m race with a time of 10:50.70. Alexandra Kaeslin (Bethel, Conn.) was right behind her in sixth in 10:52.72. In the field, freshman Lorraine Santiago (New City, N.Y.) finished sixth in the long jump (16'7") and seventh in the triple jump (35'4.5"). She is currently second in the NEC in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.
Sacred Heart will next compete at the Brother Jasper Invitational at Manhattan College on Dec. 13-14.
