FAIRFIELD, CT (April 20, 2013) – The Sacred Heart men's and women's track & field teams sent athletes to three different events this weekend as they continue to prepare for the 2013 Northeast Conference Championships just two weeks away.  The Pioneers competed at the Stony Brook Wolfie Invitational, the Morgan State University Legacy Meet and the Princeton University Larry Ellis Invitational, turning in several solid performances.

At the Stony Brook Wolfie Invitational on Saturday, the Pioneers dominated the throwing events on both the men's and women's side.  For the SHU men, senior Matthew Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) won the hammer, junior Marc Troiani (Valhalla, NY) won the shot put and sophomore John Wlasuk (Newtown, CT) won the discus to lead a dominating afternoon.  SHU took first and third in the shot with Troiani winning with a throw of 52'2.75".  Wlasuk took third with a heave of 49'4.25".

SHU claimed the top-three slots in the discus led by Wlasuk who won with a throw of 158'7".  Troiani was second at 154'11" and Wagner was third with a toss of 150'3".  In the hammer throw, Wagner tied for first place with New Hampshire's Christopher Dupuis, both registering throws of 172'2".  Wlasuk completed his dominate afternoon with a third in the hammer posting a throw of 168'0".  Junior Daniel Pepitone (Oakhurst, NJ) was sixth in the event with a throw of 150'1".

In the javelin, sophomore Scott Sheehan (Beverly, MA) was fourth with a distance of 160'2" while Pepitone took sixth at 149'8" and sophomore Andrew Berghorn (Bellmore, NY) was seventh at 136'7".

For the women, junior Lindsay Aponte (West Islip, NY) registered a win in the shot put for the third-straight week, topping the field at Stony Brook this week.  Aponte won the event with a throw of 45'6.25".  Freshman Adaora Nwodili (Coram, NY) took third with a toss of 39'5.75" and then came back with a third place finish in the discus registering a toss of 113'7".  Junior Joselyn Henry (Westport, CT) took fifth with a throw of 111'02".  In the hammer throw, senior Patricia Deutsch (Somerset, NJ) finished fifth with a distance of 128'9".

In the 800 meters, freshman Bridget Carey (St. James, NY) finished in seventh place clocking at 2:20.68.  In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Elizabeth Hutchins (Pawcatuck, CT) was fourth with a time of 11:38.70.  In the pole vault, sophomore Emily Kiss (Kenvil, NJ) was seventh clearing a height of 8'8.25".

In the men's 3,000, graduate student Richard Marcello (Foster, RI) earned the victory in a 21 runner field with a time of 8:40.79.  In the field, sophomore Thomas Ford (East Meadow, NY) placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 19'3.50".

The Pioneers sent three athletes to compete in the decathlon at the Morgan State University Legacy meet in Baltimore, MD.  Junior Drayke Jackson (East Northport, NY) came up just 14 points shy of earning the title, finishing second behind Hampton's Bennett Taylor.  Taylor won with 5,744 points with Jackson on his heels at 5,730 points.

SHU freshman Jordan Dudley (Stratford, CT) finished in third with 5,507 points and sophomore Gregory Hazell (Airmont, NY) was seventh with 5,207 points.  Jackson and Hazell tied for the win in the high jump, each clearing a height of 6'2" with Dudley taking third at 5'10.5".  Jackson also won the pole vault with a height of 12'3.5".  Hazell won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:47.09.

In the triple jump event, junior Brandon Hutchinson (Bay Shore, NY) took sixth place with a leap of 46'2.00".

In the women's 400 meters, junior Katelyn Racanelli (Riverside, CT) ran her fastest time of the outdoor season to finish eighth with a time of 56.67 seconds.

At the Princeton meet, senior Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) turned in a time of 17:42.53 in the 5,000 meters, good for 40th in a field of 77 runners.  In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) took 12th with a time of 10:46.07 and senior Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) was 16th with a season-best time of 10:58.12.

In the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase, senior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) finished 22nd with a time of 9:24.32, his fastest time this spring.

Sacred Heart will have athletes competing at the 119th Penn Relays and at the Yale Springtime Invitational this week.
