SHU Track Competes at A.I.C. & Sam Howell Invites
FAIRFIELD, CT (April 7, 2013) – The Sacred Heart track & field teams competed at the second annual American International College Invitational on Saturday with the men finishing second and women finishing seventh at the event. On Friday night, SHU sent some of their distance runners to compete at the Sam Howell Memorial Invitational at Princeton University.
The SHU men's throwers had an impressive Saturday, winning the winning the discus and hammer throw events while also scoring in the shot put and javelin. R-Junior Marc Troiani (Valhalla, NY) won the discus with an IC4A qualifying throw of 154'08". Troiani was second in the shot put with a distance of 51'11.00", his top-throw in the event this outdoor season.
Senior Matt Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) and junior Daniel Pepitone (Oakhurst, NJ) finished one-two in the hammer throw. Wagner registered a throw of 173'10" to best the field. Pepitone was second with a toss of 151'09". Wagner finished third in the discus with a throw of 139'00". In the javelin, sophomore Scott Sheehan (Beverly, MA) was sixth overall with a season-best distance of 168'07".
On the track, freshman sprinter Daniel Graw (Nesconset, NY) took second in the 100 meter dash and third in the 200 meters, running his top-times of the outdoor season. Graw clocked in at 11.01 seconds in the 100 and finished ahead of teammate Warner Cooley III (Central Islip, NY) in the 200 with a time of 22.30 seconds. Cooley ran in third with a time of 22.37 seconds. Cooley took fifth in the 400 meters with a clocking of 50.96 seconds. Senior Matthew Lyhne (Wethersfield, CT) finished sixth in 51.12 seconds.
In the field events, sophomore Gregory Hazzell (Airmont, NY) was fifth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6'00" even, his top-height of the season. Junior Brandon Hutchinson (Bay Shore, NY) finished sixth in the long jump with a season-best distance of 21'4.00".
For the women on the track, junior Katelyn Racanelli (Riverside, CT) won the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.94 seconds, her top time of the outdoor season. Sophomore Nicolette Sands (West Hempstead, NY) was in third at 59.45 seconds.
Sophomore sprinter Ashia Wright (Cheshire, CT) was fourth in the 100 meter dash and sixth in the 200 meter dash. Wright clocked in at 12.81 seconds in the 100 and 26.36 seconds in the 200.
In the field events, junior thrower Lindsay Aponte (West Islip, NY) won the shot put with a throw of 48'4.75". It was an ECAC qualifying toss and has her ranked atop the NEC performance list. Freshman teammate Adaora Nwodili (Coram, NY) took fourth in the shot and was seventh in the discus. Nwodili had a throw of 40'7.50" in the shot put, a season-best toss, and a heave of 107'09" in the discus. In the hammer throw, senior Patricia Deutsch (Somerset, NJ) was sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 124'07".
In the long jump, sophomore Dylan Baker (Petersham, MA) took fifth with a distance of 16'11.25". In the pole vault, sophomore Emily Kiss (Kenvil, NJ) cleared a height of 8'6.25" for seventh place.
At the Sam Howell Invitational, junior Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) set a new SHU outdoor track school record in the 5,000 meters. Castrogivanni finished in fifth place with a clocking of 16:44.05 to set the new school outdoor mark in the event. She continues to sit atop the NEC rankings in the event and once again met the ECAC Championship qualifying standard.
Senior Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) finished 11th in the event, running a season-best time of 17:05.28 to also meet the ECAC standard. Senior Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) ran a season best time in the event at 17:40.59.
In the men's steeplechase, senior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) finished 11th with a season-best time of 9:28.10
