The Sacred Heart men's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule over the weekend competiting at the Connecticut State Championship. The Pioneers were led by junior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) who advanced to the semifinals of the main singles draw.
Kasyanov won three matches on his journey to the semifinals of the bracket. After a bye in the round of 64, Kasyanov beat Bob Kelly of Fairfield, 6-2, 6-1 in his first match. He beat Ryan Berman of Yale, 7-5, 6-4, in the round of 16 and beat Fairfield's Joe Michalisin in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6). Kasyanov's bid run ended in the semifinals falling to Daniel Hoffman, 6-3, 6-2. Hoffman went on to win the individual title, beating his teammate Erik Blumenkranz, 6-0, 6-4.
Juniors Chris Ujick (Mattituck, NY) and Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) made runs to the quarterfinals on the other side of the bracket picking up a pair of wins. After a bye in the round of 64, Ujick beat Hartford's Aneil Bhalla, 6-1, 6-0 in his first match. In the round of 16, Ujick beat Robert Ferrante of Fairfield, 6-3, 7-5. His run was ended by Blumenkranz in the quarter, 7-6, 6-2. In the same bracket, Sophomore Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) won his opening match, 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) over Chris Nelson of Quinnipiac before falling to UConn's Jai Yoon, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (3).
Mazzarese had a bye in the first round and notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Joe Goldstein of UConn in the round of 32. Mazzarese advanced to the quarters with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ryan Berthod of Fairfield before seeing his day end with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Daniel Hoffman.
Junior Adam Gart (Bedford, MA) won the second round main draw singles consolation, running off four wins in the bracket. Gard opened with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UConn's Dave Adams. He posted a 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (9) win over Wei Lin of UConn to force a match-up wiht teammate Sullo. Gart made it to the title match with a 6-1, 7-5 win and then beat Quinnipiac's James Kwei, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action, the team's of junior Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) and Gart and Ujick and senior Jinal Shah earned a pair of wins in the second round doubles consolation bracket. Syer and Gart posted an 8-2 win over Chris Nelson and Justin Gersti of Quinnipiac and an 8-4 win over UConn's Ricardo Cardona and Matt Burns. Ujick and Shah posted a 9-8 (6) win over Hartford's Aneil Bhalla and Marco Neves and a 9-8 win over teammates Kasyanova and Mazzerese.
