Hamden, CT - Freshman Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) won the "A" Flight Singles, leading the Sacred Heart men's tennis team at the Quinnipiac Men's Tennis Invitational over the weekend. Kasyanov improves to 8-2 in singles play this year.
In his run to the title, Kasyanov dropped just two sets. He defeated Jared Dorfman from Rhode Island 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and went on to take out Bucknell's Ira Reibeisen 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 in the second round. Kasyanov dispatched of Quinnipiac's Brian Kikkelson 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals to reach the championship match against Quinnipiac's John Hughes. In the title match, Kasaynov won the first set 7-5, dropped the second set 6-4 but recovered ti win the deciding set 10-8.
Freshman Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) won his first round match in the "B" singles, taking out Fairfield's Brian Szikla 3-6, 6-1, 10-6. In doubles action, Kasyanov and Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) teamed up to advance to the semifinals of the "B" flight. Freshman Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) also won a match in the consolation singles bracket.
The Pioneers are back on the court Tuesday afternoon when they visit UConn. Matches will start at 3:00 pm.
