HAMDEN, Conn. (October 12, 2009) - Sacred Heart junior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) won the Flight "A" singles draw as the Pioneer competed at the Quinnipiac Invitational over the weekend. Kasyanov defeated Quinnipiac's John Hughes in the final, 6-1, 6-1.
Kasyanov opened his "Flight A" run by beating Hofstra's Stian Tvedt, 6-4, 6-2. Kasyanov moved on to the title match in the flight thanks to a win over Jai Yoon of UConn in the semi's. Yoon took the first set 6-3 but Kasyanov rebounded for a 6-3, 10-6 three set victory. He swept through Hughes in the title match, 6-1, 6-1.
In the "B" singles flight, junior Mike Syer (Oakville, ON) advanced out of the opening round with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 win over Hofstra's Matt Wacks before falling to Fairfield's Joe Michalisin, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). In the "C" singles flight, freshman Albert Christie (Wilton, CT) and senior Jinal Shah (Mombass, Kenya) both won their opening matches. Christie beat Saint Peter's Lukas Pospisil, 6-2, 6-3, while beat Chris Frakes from Saint Peter's in the first set 6-3, then advanced when he retired down 1-0 in the second set.
In doubles action, a pair of Pioneer teams advanced to the semifinals. Syer and junior Adam Gart (Bedford, MA) advanced to the semifinal round of the "A" flight while Christie and sophomore Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) made it through to the "B" flight semi's. Syer and Gart beat Hofstra's Damion and Thompson-Star in the opening match, 9-7, and dealt Fairfield's Ferrante and Kelly an 8-5 loss to move on to the semifinals. Their run fell short, losing to QU's Mikkelson and Kwei, 8-6. In the "B" flight, Christie and Sullo opened with an 8-6 win over UConn and advanced with a win over Fairfield, 9-7. Their chance at the finals was ended by QU's Nelson and Lazerowich, 8-4.
The Pioneers are back in action this week playing in the ITA Regional Championships at Dartmouth on October 15th through 17th.
