Loudonville, NY - Freshmen Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) and Michael Syer (Ontario, CA) teamed up to win their doubles match and then each won their singles matches to help lead the Sacred Heart men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Siena in a dual match Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers won the doubles point and then took three of the six singles matches to earn the victory.
Mazzerese and Syer won their number two doubles match 8-3 over Stefan Putyera and Jay Godbole of Siena. Mazzarese went on to defeat Putyera in the third singles match 6-1, 6-3 while Syer took out Nick Rutherford, 7-5, 6-2, in the number two singles slot.
The Pioneers took the doubles point when Bryan Rodgers (Mystic, CT) and John Harvey (Wethersfield, CT) took out Siena's Kevin Gioia and Jose Loren by an 8-5 score. Freshman Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) then clinched the match for SHU with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Gioia in the number five singles match.
The Pioneers play a pair of dual matches at home on Saturday. First they will host Adelphi at 11:00 am and then welcome in Robert Morris for a 3:00 pm start.
