Austin, TX - In their first ever NCAA tournament appearnace, the Sacred Heart men's tennis team fell to the No. 12 University of Texas in the first round Friday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The Longhorns claimed the doubles session in about 30 minutes. The Longhorns Kellen Damico and Ed Corrie dealt Sacred Heart's Michael Syer and Adam Gart an 8-0 defeat at first doubles, and Texas juniors Josh Zavala and Jon Wiegand clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 win at third doubles over the Pioneers' Nick Mazzarese and Jinal Shah. The remaining match at second doubles was suspended.
Texas added decisive singles wins from seniors Jonah Kane-West and Miguel Reyes Varela and the clincher from junior Dimitar Kutrovsky to finish off Sacred Heart. Kane-West tallied a 6-0, 6-1 win over Syer at the sixth slot, and Reyes Varela registered a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Shah at fifth singles. Kutrovsky nailed down the Texas victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kirill Kasyanov at first singles. The remaining matches were suspended given that Texas had clinched the team victory.
Sacred Heart completed the season with a program record 14 victories
