SHU Men's Tennis Beats Hofstra, 7-0; Women Fall 4-3

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart men's tennis team notched their fifth-straight win on Thursday afternoon, blanking the Hofstra Pride, 7-0. The SHU women came up short against the Pride, falling 4-3. The Pioneer men improve to 13-6-1 on the season while the SHU women fall to 8-11. Both teams are back in action on Friday afternoon heading to Northeast Conference foe Quinnipiac.
The Pioneer men swept all six singles matches in convincing fashion starting at the #1 spot behind junior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY). Kasynov beat Ben Thompson-Star, 6-1, 6-1 running his streak to seven-straight victories as he heads into the weekend at 22-9 on the season. In dual match play, Kasyanov is 14-3 at #1 singles and hasn't lost since dropping a three-set decision to Northern Illinois' Maksym Bartiuk on March 8th.
SHU's Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) and Adam Gart (Bedford, MA) posted matching 6-0, 6-0 victories at #2 and #3 singles. Ujkic beat Pedro Gimenez while Gart topped Josh Levinson. Ujkic has won four-straight while Gart is riding a streak of five-straight singles wins and seven of his last eight.
Junior Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) won his #4 singles match against Johan Vila 6-1 and 6-1 and fellow junior Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) won at #5, 6-2, 6-2, over Jason Sinkoff. Sophomore Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) finished the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tyler Allen, his fourth-straight.
SHU took the doubles point with wins at #2 and #3. Senior Jinal Shah (Mombassa, Kenya) and junior Jacob Miller (West Chesterfield, NH) posted an 8-4 win over Levinson and Allen and Sullo and junior John Harvey (Wethersfield, CT) clinched the win with a 9-8 win over Vila and Pedro Gimenez.
The Pioneer women won the doubles point with wins by junior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) and senior Julianne Kasinow (Wall,NJ) winning at #1 and sophomores Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) winning at #3. Demers and Kasinow beat Zoe Taylor and Paige Polizois 8-3, improving to 10-6 as a team this season. Donnelly and Downing beat Christie Gattelaro and Brook Sailer, 8-4, improving their record to 7-4 in doubles play.
Downing posted a singles victory in the #6 slot beating Polizois, 6-4, 6-4, raising her singles record to 14-10 on the season. The Pioneers other singles victory came from junior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) at #3 over Gattelaro, 6-2, 6-3. Harrington improved to 14-12 overall and 8-3 when play at #3.
SHU lost tough three-set matches at #4 and #5 singles. Sonia Tsay beat Kasinow 6-3, 6-3 after dropping the first set 6-4 while Gilanchi beat sophomore Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.
