Pioneers Split a Pair of Matches to Open Spring

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (January 31, 2010) - The Sacred Heart men's tennis team opened up the spring portion of their schedule splitting their first two dual matches, falling at Dartmouth, 5-2, and posting a 4-3 win over NJIT. Junior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) opened the spring with a pair of singles win at #1.
Kasyanov posted a 7-6, 6-1 win over Stephen Greif of Dartmouth in the top singles position. Fellow junior Adam Gart (Bedford, MA) earned the Pioneers other point against the Big Green, defeating Chris Ho at #3 singles after dropping the first set, 6-4. Gart bounced back winning 7-6 (6) and 10-5.
Gary and fellow junior Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) teamed to win at #1 doubles, beating Jeff Friedman and Michael Laser, 9-8. SHU sophomore Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) lost a hard fought decision at #6 singles, falling to Mike Jacobs, 5-7, 6-4 (12-10).
The Pioneers took four of the six singles matches to come away with a 4-3 win over the NJIT Highlanders over the weekend. Kasyanov led the way winning again at #1, beating Fraser Croad, 7-5 and 6-4.
Gart posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Carl Lundquist at #3 singles while Syer defeated Cosmin Chiujdea at #5 singles, 6-3 and 6-4. Sullo wrapped up the win at #4 singles, beating Dimitri Athans, 6-4 and 6-2.
Juniors Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) and Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) both lost hard fought three set singles matches. Mazzarese fell at #4, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 while Ujkic fell at #2 singles, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.
The Pioneers are back in action at the ECAC Championships at Yale University on February 12th and 13th.
