NEW HAVEN, Conn – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team closed out their fall schedule over the weekend at the Connecticut State Championships on the campus of Yale University. The two day event had the Pioneers competing against UCONN, Fairfield, Hartford, Quinnipiac, and Yale.
In the main singles draw, junior Ryan Wennberg (Huntington Station, NY) and sophomore Matt Dean (Newington, CT) both earned victories. Wennberg took down Hartford's Jay Baker (6-4, 6-1), while Dean defeated Reece Breault (6-3, 6-1) of Fairfield.
SHU had most of their success in the consolation draw, where junior Justin Pagan (Flushing, NY) and sophomore Brian Power (Pelham, NY) both made it to the semi-finals. Pagan defeated Hartford's Alex Holdstein (6-0, 6-3) and also teammate freshman John Bogdanovich (Barrington, RI) (6-1, 6-0) to reach semi, while Power took down UCONN's Zac McEntee (6-0, 6-4) and teammate Luka Bagi (6-4, 6-3) on his way to semi-finals.
In doubles action, Power and senior Kevin Budrawich (New Canaan, CT) were champions of the consolation draw. The duo of Power and Budrawich defeated two teams from Fairfield and a duo from Quinnipiac to claim the doubles title.
The Pioneers are off until January 25th when they play host to the NJIT Highlanders indoors at Yale University.
