Men's Soccer Falls to Quinnipiac in NEC Opener, 1-0
Oct. 5, 2007
Fairfield, CT - Junior Graciano Brito scored the only goal of the game in the 75th minute and sophomore Frederick Hall made nine saves in goal to preserve a 1-0 victory for Quinnipiac over Sacred Heart in Northeast Conference men's soccer action Friday at Campus Field. The game was the league opener for both teams.
After a hard fought first 75 minutes in which both teams had scoring opportunities, Brito took a pass from Danilo Schiavon from about 30 yards out and started to sprint down the left side of the field. Sacred Heart goaltender Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) came out to try to take the ball away but Brito was able to dribble around him. Once he was behind the defense, Brito fired a crossing shot into the right corner of the net to score the only goal of the game. It was his league leading 10th tally of the season.
The Pioneers had several good scoring opportunities throughout the game, especially in the first half. Junior Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil) had two outstanding chances early on. First in the 7th minute he fired a shot from the top of the box that went just high over the crossbar. Then late in the first half, Mendes had another shot at what he thought was an opener corner of the net. However, Hall dove to his left to get a piece of the ball with his fingertips to deflect it wide. Early in the second half, senior Brice Victor (Bridgeport, CT) had a scoring chance that was thwarted by Hall as well.
Sacred Heart out-shot Quinnipiac 19-8 for the game. The Bobcats did not have a corner attempt while SHU earned seven.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday when they host Central Connecticut State in another NEC contest. Game time at Campus Field is set for 1:00 pm.
