Men's Soccer Tabbed Fourth in NEC Preseason Poll
Aug. 15, 2007
Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference by a vote of the league's coaches in the preseason poll released by the league Wednesday. Defending champion Monmouth was picked to win the conference with Fairleigh Dickinson picked second and Robert Morris third ahead of SHU.
The Pioneers (7-10-1, 3-6 NEC) brings back all 10 starters along with junior keeper Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England), who posted a 1.43 goals against average last season. Now in his third year, head coach Joe Barroso can look to sophomore forward Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) for instant offense. Fredriksson ranked second among NEC freshman last season with six goals and 14 points. Junior midfielder/forward Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT) placed sixth in the league in goals (five) and ninth in points (14).
Long Island was picked fifth in the poll. Central Connecticut State and Saint Francis (PA) tied for sixth, with Mount St. Mary's, St. Francis (NY) and Quinnipiac rounding out the poll. The NEC will be looking to build upon a strong 2006 season when three teams - Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson and Central Connecticut State - earned national rankings at various points in the NSCAA/adidas poll.
Sacred Heart opens its season August 31 with a visit to Providence.
