Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team has announced it's captains for the upcoming 2008 season. Seniors Luke Gagliardi (North Branford, CT), Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) and Jonatan Allback (Gothenburg, Sweden) will lead the Pioneers in their quest for a Northeast Conference championship. For Jones and Allback it will be their second season as captains while Gagliardi will be in his first tenure as captain.
Gagliardi was named to the NSCAA/Adidas Men's Soccer North Atlantic All-Region Third last season. Head coach Joe Barroso said Gagliardi was named a captain as "a reward for all the work he has done for the team not only on the field where he excels but also what he means to the team off the field. Luke is very well respected by all team members and has become a mentor for all under-class players."
Jones has been a fixture in goal for the Pioneers since his arrival in 2005. A first team All-Northeast Conference selection and third team All-Region selection last year, finished the season tied for second in the league with seven shutouts. He was also fourth in the conference in save percentage (.833) and goals against average (0.91). Jones was also an All-NEC pick as a freshman in 2005 and was named to the All-Region team that season as well.
An anchor of the Pioneer defense for the last three season, Allback led a squad that was finished the season third in the Northeast Conference in goals allowed.
