FAIRFIELD, CT (November 6, 2009) – The Sacred Heart University men’s soccer team lost a Northeast Conference contest to Fairleigh Dickinson at Campus Field Friday night.  The loss ends the Pioneers bid for a NEC playoff berth.  SHU finished the season with a 7-8-2 record overall and 4-5-1 in the NEC, while the Knights move on at 9-8-1 and 6-3-1.

 

FDU got on the board in the 29th minute as a shot from the right side by senior Serge Zulu snuck between Pioneer goalie Alex Fait (Ottawa, Canada/St. Joseph’s) and the near post.  The Knights would strike later in the second half as senior forward Fernando Bo Huthmacher played a ball over the SHU defense to freshman Dominic Reinold who slid a shot past Fait to the lower right corner of the goal.

 

The Pioneers had multiple scoring chances from free kicks throughout the game.  Early on senior Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Hvitfeldtska) fired a shot from nearly 35 yards out off a set piece that hit under the crossbar and bounced out.  Before the end of the half SHU would come close to tying it up as a free kick was played wide to junior Aaron Kiely (London, England/Finchley) who sent a cross into the box where Norman Baer (Marl ,Germany/Albert-Schweitzer) hit a strong header that was saved by a diving Majdi Zaineh.


 

 

 

Fait finished with two saves for Sacred Heart, while Zaineh collected three stops to earn the shutout.  In all, there were six yellow cards handed out during the game.  Four to the Knights and two to the Pioneers.
