Sacred Heart Drops 2-1 Decision to St. Francis (PA)

FAIRFIELD, CT (November 5, 2004) - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision to visiting St. Francis (PA) in Northeast Conference soccer action Friday afternoon. Bernie Showers netted both Red Flash goals to lead St. Francis to the win and puts them a step closer to earning a NEC tournament berth. The Pioneers fall to 1-13-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the league with the loss.
Showers got the Red Flash started in the 24th minute when he took a Cesar Pena pass on the left side and fired his shot to the far right corner and in. He made it 2-1 in the 39th minute when St. Francis was awarded a penalty kick. He quickly stepped up and buried his shot to give SFPA a 2-0 advantage.
The Pioneers cut the score to 2-1 in the 48th minute of the second half on a Ricarti Mendes goal. Tony Allegro slid a pass through two defenders to a waiting Mendes on the left side who then buried his shot off the left post and in.
SHU out shot St. Francis, 10-5 in the game and 8-0 in the second half but couldn't convert any of their game tying chances. Red Flash goalie Bobby Pipech made three saves in earning the win for the now 9-6-2 St. Francis team. Matt Weston made two saves in the loss for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers will close out the regular season on Sunday afternoon, hosting Robert Morris at 1:00 pm.
