Brooklyn, NY - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team kept its playoff hopes alive Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime victory over Long Island.  Freshman Justin Brewer (Somers, CT) scored a goal early in the second half to bring the game level at one.  Marcello Castro (Parana, Brazil) found the game winning goal just three minutes into overtime with an assist from Giancarlo Massaro (Woodbridge, CT).

Long Island (6-11, 3-6 NEC) outshot the Pioneers 10-2 in the first half but SHU goalie Alex Fait (Ottawa, Canada)  made four of his six saves to keep his team in the game.  The Blackbirds would strike first in the 17th minute on a Jakeem Johnson marker, Steve Jakubowki and Juan Lanza earned assists on the play.

Sacred Heart (7-7-2, 4-4-1 NEC) tied the game ten minutes into the second period as Aaorn Kiely (London, England) played a through ball into the box that Brewer slipped past the keeper.  The Pioneers would earn the victory and three points in the standings when Castro beat LIU goalkeeper John Connolly to Massaro's pass in the penalty box and the freshman midfielder found the back of the net for the first game winning goal of his career.

The Pioneers conclude their season this Friday, November 6, as they take on Fairleigh Dickinson on Senior Night at Campus Field.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
