Fairfield, CT - Freshman Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT) scored with one minute to go in the first half and the Pioneers men's soccer team won a crucial NEC game, 1-0, over Fairleigh Dickinson to extend their unbeaten streak to seven games.
Tessitore scored the only goal of the game, his team leading eighth of the season, off a pass from sophomore Raphael Rezende (Greenwich, CT). Tessitore lobbed the ball over the head of Knights goaltender Elvir Prasovic and into the left corner of the net.
Both teams had good opportunities to score during the game. Tessitore had a chance to put the Pioneers up early when he got behind the Knight's defense 10 minutes into the game. However, Sacred Heart was called for a foul, negating the play.
The Knights had a chance to tie the game two minutes into the second half when Alejandro Badoya fired a shot that sailed just high over the net. Then in the 55th minute, Nadav Gottesman shot one off the cross bar on a free kick.
The entire game was physical throughout as the Knights were called for 28 fouls and the Pioneers 15. Sophomore Anthony Anzevui (Newcastle, England) received a yellow card for the Pioneers.
Freshman Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) made three saves for his third straight shutout. Jones has recorded a shutout in each of the Pioneers six wins this year and now has a goals against average of 1.02.
The Pioneers (6-5-4, 3-1-2 NEC) have now won three straight games. They will close out the regular season with two home games next weekend. Friday the Pioneers host Quinnipiac at 3:00 pm, and Sunday the Pioneers welcome Central Connecticut State at 1:00 pm on senior day at Campus Field.
