West Long Branch, NJ - Steven Halloway's scored the only goal of the game in the 68th minute as Monmouth beat Sacred Heart, 1-0, in men's soccer action on The Great Lawn on Sunday. The loss eliminated the Pioneers from NEC playoff contention.
The teams went back-and-forth in the first half with each team hitting the post in the first 45 minutes of play.
In the 68th minute of the game Monmouth forward Michael Miller sent the ball up to Halloway who chipped the ball over the head of Sacred Heart goaltender Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) breaking the tied game. Halloway, playing in his last regular season game, notched his 16th score of the season, tying Mark Wilson's school record. It was also his fifth game-winning goal of the year. It was Miller's fourth assist of the season.
With a one-goal lead the MU offense kept up the pressure while the defense locked up the SHU attackers. Freshman Luke Gagliardi (North Branford, CT) led the Pioneers offense with three shots.
Monmouth finished with a 12-11 advantage in shots and had a 3-1 lead in corner kicks. Monmouth goaltender Daniel Schenkel got the win for the Hawks, making three saves in the game. It was the junior's 11th shutout of the season, setting a new school record. Miller finished with four saves for the Pioneers.
Monmouth heads into post-season play with a 12-3-3 record (7-0-2 NEC) while the Pioneers fall to 7-10-1 (3-6 NEC).
