Fairfield, CT - Senior Jason Tessitore (Orange, CT) had a goal and an assist and goaltender Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) made four saves to record his third straight shutout as Sacred Heart beat Army, 2-0, in men's soccer action Tuesday night at a blustery Campus Field.
Jones, who has now recorded three straight shutout victories, was tested mostly in the first half. In the 12th minute the Black Knights' Tanner Robinson fired a ball on goal that Jones corralled into his midsection. In the 30th minute, Michael Vint sent a ball towards the top part of the net which Jones tipped high over the crossbar. Finally, in the 31st minute, Andrew Kydes aimed a ball for the corner, but Jones dove and swatted it away with his fingertips. Jones has not allowed a goal in his last 246:17 between the pipes.
Tessitore sparked the Pioneer offense in the final minute of the first half. The senior sent a shot on net that was blocked away by Black Knights goalkeeper John-Michael Gallogly. However, the rebound bounced right back to Tessitore who found a cutting Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) in the middle of the field and hit him with a perfect centering pass. From there, Fredriksson simply tapped the ball into the open goal to put the Pioneers on the board.
Playing with the wind in the second half, Sacred Heart dominated most of the play, outshooting Army 9-3 after the intermission. In the 57th minute, Matt Mones (Trumbull, CT) hit Tessitore with a nice cross lob pass on the right side of the goal and Tessitore shot it back across into the left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
The Pioneers continue their hunt for the NEC playoffs with two league road games this weekend. SHU visits Monmouth Friday at 3:00 pm.
