Fairfield, CT - In a match-up of two of the top defensive teams in the Northeast Conference, Sacred Heart and Saint Francis played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer Sunday afternoon at Campus Field. It was the second straight shutout for SHU goaltender Matt Jones, (Stoke-on-Trent, England) who needed to makes just two saves in the contest.
The Pioneers held the better of the play early on, as sophomore Lusiano Dadario (East Haven, CT) broke free three times in the span of the 13th minute of play. His first shout, a header went high over the bar, a second was saved by Red Flash goaltender Brad Williams and the third shot sailed wide to the left of the net. In the 30th minute, junior Felipe Celikkaya (Flintbek, Germany) fired a shot on net the Williams was able to block down as well.
The Red Flash had the first good scoring chance of the second half, as sophomore Owen Gombami launched a shot in the 72nd minute that Jones stopped. As time wound down in regulation, SHU junior William Richards (Commack, NY) found himself with a breakaway at midfield. He ripped a ball from about 30 yards out, but Williams was able to come out and stop the ball before it came close to the goal.
After neither team had a shot in the first overtime, the second overtime featured a couple of chances for both teams. In the 104th minute Celikkaya fired a shot from the corner of the goal that sailed over the crossbar. Two minutes later Danile Moir sent a shot a goal that Jones had to knock away.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday night when they host Army. Game time is 7:00 pm.
