Fairfield, CT - Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweeden) scored for the men's soccer team in the 80th minute but the Pioneers could not hold on and were forced to settle for a 1-1 tie with Army Wednesday night. Alex Fait (Ottawa, Canada) made three saves while Black Knights keeper Ryan Currens made eight saves, including three in the second overtime, to force the draw. The Pioneers finish non-conference play with a 3-3-1 record in 2009 and return to Northeast Conference action Friday against Bryant.
Army (1-11-1) held the slight advantage in the first half outshooting Sacred Heart 6-5. The Pioneers earned two corner kicks in the first frame while holding the Black Knights without one. Neither team would be able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes as the two sides went into the intermission knotted at zero.
Sacred Heart (6-5-2) found the opening goal with 10:27 remaining in the second half. The goal came on a corner kick taken by Nemanja Filimonovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and was put away at close range by Fredriksson. Army would find the equalizer just three minutes later on an unassisted goal by Sean Kim. Kim made several moves to put hte Pioneer defense before ripping a shot at the top left of the 18 yard box.
The Pioneers outshot the Black Knights 5-4 in the overtime periods but could not find the game winner. Sacred Heart returns to action in a crucial NEC contest Friday afternoon against Bryant. Game time is set for 3:00 pm in Smithfield, RI.
